Depth in Art

By Miron

This composition makes use of a vanishing point in order to create depth in the image. By using similar shapes in the background and having them shrink into a specific point, the viewer feels that space is created in the drawing. The inclusion of the orbs also helps to give a sense of depth by putting items in the picture to interact with the change in depth.

Contrast in Art

By Monet

This composition uses a lot of contrast to develop the background and foreground. The use of warm colors against the blue sky helps to emulate a change in temperature throughout the painting. The brownish colors and green colors used to make the island and tower stand out from the water and sky due to the complete color difference used in the painting.

Negative Space

This composition uses a clever arrangement of negative space to confuse the viewer. When looking at the composition from one angle, it appears that there are two faces yet from the other, there is just a cup. The use of negative space helps guide your eye. The more black there is, the more you see the faces. The more white there is, the better you can make out the cup in the middle.

Circular Composition

By Colton S.D.

This composition uses circles in a very obvious way. Even thought they are not perfect circles and appear to be more oval shaped, when grouped together like they are, they give the entire painting an overall circular feel. To me this composition almost looks like raindrops falling or water on a windshield.

Triangles In Art

By Leonardo Da Vinci

The use of triangles is a very powerful tool in art. Obviously, we all know this painting. The Mona Lisa is one of the most famous paintings in history and it shines because of the simplistic use of the triangle. As seen in the picture, the triangle has been highlighted to show where it would be placed in the composition. A triangle is important because like a commonly known fact, things near the top of the triangle are more important. In this case, the face/head is the main focus of the painting. Using a triangle, the painting allows you to focus your attention toward certain parts of the painting that the artist wants to emulate.
